Hilton Head Island's Flood Hazard

Flooding in the Town of Hilton Head Island may be caused by a number of naturally occurring events including hurricanes, storm surge, high tides and heavy rains. Being prepared is the best defense against damage from flooding and other disasters.

National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a federal program designed to reduce flood-related losses by providing flood insurance to property owners, renters, and businesses, and encouraging communities to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations. The NFIP aims to help individuals and communities recover faster after flood events by offering financial protection against flood damage.

FEMA'S Community Rating System

The Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management practices that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The CRS also provides an incentive for communities to initiate new flood risk reduction activities.

The Town currently is a Class 5 community. This rating allows all property owners a 25% discount on their flood insurance premiums.

The Town has actively participated in FEMA's CRS Program since 1991.This program rates communities on how effectively they manage their floodplains in four major categories.
